Allows the printing of a testpage. however, terminal then just has a blinking cursor and there is no command prompt. Run $lpadmin-p-Rusb-unidir-default to remove this change.

Wait until the job disappears from the queue or turns into "Stopped" state, independent whether something gets out of the printer. I was seriously just about to toss Mint (or the printer) out the window when I ran across your instructions. Any suggestions? This should work for other printers too. Select "Server Settings" in the list on the left or in newer versions with the printers showing as icons choose "Server" in the main menu and then "Settings".
Have you tried sending a test page from CUPS (http://localhost:631)?
